1. 研究目的与意义

Research translation has a long history. For the benefit of audience and translators, Gutt explore the relevance theory in translation. But before the 19th century ago, linguists and translators do not have much attention on the relevance theory. Yet in 20th century, following the development of science and multimedia, people realize the importance of entertainment. Foreign movies step in the stage of China. Chinese, young or old, are fascinated by foreign movies, thus accelerating the development of movie subtitle translation.In the application of the movie subtitle translation, the relevance theory plays a significant role in the guidance of audience#8217; understanding. Besides, with the help of the relevance theory, the translation of movie subtitle is an ostentation-inference process to connect author and translator. From the perspective of the relevance theory, translators infer the original meaning of the author and infer the cognitive context of the audience, thus choose the best translation method and produce the best movie subtitle.The research of the movie subtitle translation can improve the quality of the translation of movie subtitle, strengthen Chinese audience#8217; understanding of the foreign culture and deepen the culture exchange of China and foreign countries.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The research is targeted at exploring the application of the relevance theory in the movie subtitle translation. Theoretically, the thesis is aimed at studying the relevance theory in depth and finding the importance of the relevance theory. Practically, it takes the movie Pygmalion as example and compare the difference between the translated movie subtitle by using the relevance theory and the one did not using the relevance theory. Also, translators and linguists regard the relevance as relative or subjective, as it depends upon the state of knowledge of a hearer when they encounter an utterance. 3. 国内外研究现状

Relevance theory is a proposal by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson that seeks to explain the second method of communication: one that takes into account implicit inferences. It argues that the 'hearer/reader/audience will search for meaning in any given communication situation and having found meaning that fits their expectation of relevance, will stop processing (Sperber Wilson, 1986).' In China, the research about the relevance theory can be dissected into three phases: the introduction phase, the research phase and the application phase. Although linguists and translators have already noticed the importance of the relevance theory, but the research about the theory still cannot achieve advanced level. However, some researches still contribute to the development of the relevance theory. Specifically, from the perspective of the relevance theory to translate the literary texts. Literary works, which are written texts, are characterized by #8220;careful use of language, being written in a literary genre (poetry, prose fiction, or drama), being read aesthetically, and containing many weak implicature#8221; (Meyer, 1997:24, cited in Sang, 2006). Seeing the above factors related to the literary translation, and on the basis of Gutt#8217;s relevance theory framework of translation and his recent studies, this article attempts to build an explanatory framework for translating the implicit information in literary texts. It also aims at providing a natural basis for an account of evaluation and decision-making.

4. 计划与进度安排

The first step is to define the relevance theory and explain the development of the relevance theory according to the time sequence. The theory offers an empirical, cognition-based account of human communication. Also, The notion of relevance is defined as a cost-benefit relation. Secondly, the important point is to combine the relevance theory to Pygmalion, explain the application of the relevance theory in Pygmalion and compare the difference of the movie that does not apply, thus making explicit the advantages of the relevance theory. Then, the next step is to illustrate the contributions and limitations of the relevance theory. Therefore, the research can reach to the effect that can improve the development of the relevance theory. The relevance theory is depending on the contextual effect when information conveyed by the stimulus is combined with contextual assumptions, for example, with information already available to the audience, perhaps from theory or perceptions. Thirdly, the research acknowledge the importance of provide some strategy and methods for the movie subtitle translation. The final step is to conclude the research result and method, thus improving the quality of the effect of the movie.Time arrangement: The first and the last part can be completed in few days because of its simple contents and structure, the large proportion of time is contributed in the second and the third part owe to the research of the movie subtitle from the perspective of the relevance theory.
