1. 研究目的与意义

With development of globalization, more and more people can understand two or more languages. The globalization brings closer relationship between countries and ethnic groups. Nowadays, the public signs have become a significant part of exchanges of culture and Regional economic and social development. To translate Chinese Public signs into English has become an important task for the exchanges between two cultures and for the development of our economy. It is both necessary and urgent for us to focus much more attention on public signs translation and to employ scientific, systematic and practical translation methods as the guide in this field. Meanwhile, how to achieve standard and appropriate translation of public signs becomes a major concern of the public.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Watching the bilingual Public signs here and there in a city, we can find a number of mistakes in translation, which include spelling mistakes, lexical mistakes, grammar mistakes, Chinglish, impolite tone and unconventional expressions. All these translation problems should be solved well and such mistakes should be corrected. Otherwise, this will affect the development of our country and cultural exchanges negatively. The main contents of the essay include the following: 1. What are the existing translation errors in the present Chinese-English public signs? 2. Why do we have to correct wrong CHINESE TO ENGLISH (C-E) public signs translation? 3. What translation methods and strategies can be applied in C-E public signs translation?

3. 国内外研究现状

People from all around the world are attracted to our country. Most publicity materials are edited and printed in English and Chinese. The cross-cultural communications and exchanges will be handicapped if the public signs are of bad quality or full of errors and we may become the laughing stock in the world; or what is even worse, the way will be blocked for us to attract the foreign investment and thus make great losses. The scholars and experts begin to conduct some researches in this field. Mary Snell-Hornby published some papers and some books and Mark Shuttleworth , Moira Cowie wrote a dictionary about CHINESE TO ENGLISH translation. Most of them just collected bilingual public signs or pointed out some mistakes in this field.
