1. 研究目的与意义
Kazuo Ishiguro is one of the most celebrated contemporary fiction authors in the English-speaking world, having received four Man Booker Prize nominations, and winning the 1989 award for his novel The Remains of the Day. In 2008, The Times ranked Ishiguro 32nd on their list of 'The 50 greatest British writers since 1945'. After his first novel A Pale View of Hills which won him Winifred Holtby Prize of the Royal Society of Literature, almost every novel of Kazuo Ishiguro is among the list of bestsellers. The plain writing style, broad vision and profound philosophy that embedded in his works altogether lead to his great fame and his position as an outstanding novelist. Since the publishing ofNever Let Me Go in 2005, it becomes one of the major concerns for critics of Kazuo Ishiguro''s works. Never Let Me Go is Kazuo Ishiguro''s latest work. It deals with the controversial subject of clones. National and international critics focus their research interests ranging from its science fiction characteristics to the Utopian or dystopia concepts implied in the novel. However, few scholars analyze it from the spatial narrative, especially linking the space with the destiny of the main character Kathy. This thesis, through textual analysis from the perspective of spatial narrative tries to illustrate the features of its narration and the theme construction by spatial narrative. It also analyzes the influence of space on Kathy''s development and explores how she finds her identity and continues pursuing self on her road. The most importance thing is that Kazuo Ishiguro provides readers an explanation of the briefness of time and the importance of memory by using spatial narrative. The research of this theme itself is not boring but profound and practical. In addition, with the worldwide attention to clones, I believe, these meaningful ideas are still going to be of magnificent importance.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Through analyzing the space where Kathy used to stay and the miserable fate of clones in Kazuo Ishiguro#8217;s Never Let Me Go, the paper aims to illustrate the features and theme construction of its narration and the experience of the protagonist. The essay concentrates on the author#8217;s view on clones from the perspective of spatial narrative. The difficulties lie in the function of physical space and spiritual space. This thesis is made up of five parts. It begins with the general introduction to Kazuo Ishiguro and his novel Never Let Me Go, as well as the literature review domestic and abroad on the study of it. It also contains the thesis statement. Part two maps out the relationship between space and time: utilize space to represent time and use time to understand and measure space. Part three introduces the physical spaces where Kathy has lived: Hailsham, the Cottages and the Recovery Centers. By analyzing how the space affects Kathy, the change of Kathy''s self-recognition is shown. Part four shows the spiritual space through language, plot and attitude of characters. The last part is the conclusion. It summarizes the importance of interpreting Never Let Me Go from the perspective of spatial narrative. It is clear that space places a vital role in Kathy''s way of finding her identity. It points out that Kathy continues her searching for her identity in her last days. It also signifies that people should constantly pursue their identity on their way. From the analysis of Never Let Me Go through the theory of spatial narrative, this thesis emphasizes the significance of searching for the real identity on one''s road. In this way, people can surpass themselves and make progress finally.
3. 国内外研究现状
Published in 2005, Never Let Me Go has attracted academic attention in foreign countries. Critics at home and abroad have attained fruitful achievement on the study of Kazuo Ishiguro. Scholars in China have made enormous efforts to bring Kazuo Ishiguro''s fantastic novels to the domestic readers. They have also done, although not much, certain studies and researches to elucidate the humanistic spirits and artistic values in Kazuo Ishiguro''s works. In China mainland, there are 9 published theses for master''s degree, more than 50 journal articles as well as introductory reports scattered in various newspapers and magazines. However, there is no published monograph in this domain yet.As a classic, Never Let Me Go has been analyzed a lot by American and foreign critics on various domains, ranging from the genre studies, post humanism, even to biological sciences. The early articles and reviews of the novel always include genetic technology of clones. For example, Gabriele Griffin is representative. In #8220;Science and the Cultural Imaginary: The Case of Kazuo Ishiguro''s Never Let Me Go#8221;,he points out that it is the task if a critical science fiction 'animates the cultural imaginary to explore the meaning of the new bio-technologies in and for our lives and selves' (Griffin, 658). Some other papers choose a different perspective, questing narrative study. And Kazuo Ishiguro#8217;s novels are great materials for the study in this particular aspect. Theories on narrative study and strategies are touched upon. And many valuable researches have been done. Mike Petry has one monograph on the topic named Narratives of Memory and Identity: The Novels of Kazuo Ishiguro (1999) which is precisely of this concern. Discussion on this issue can also be found scattering in the periodicals. The unreliable narration through memory, those flashbacks, and other flexible employment of narrative techniques all help to create a unique narrative structure and also help to construct a real inner world of his characters. In our humble opinions, comparing with what have been achieved in west, studies of Kazuo Ishiguro and his major novels in China remain blank to some extent that need to be filled promptly. And the spatial narrative studies of Kazuo Ishiguro are by far not as sufficient as studies from other aspects. Besides those studies from the perspective of spatial narrative that have been touched upon by some critics, there are still many interesting issues that can be covered.
