1. 研究目的与意义

Everything I Never Told You(2014) was written by a Chinese American writer, Celeste Ng. The story focused on Lydia''s death mystery, told the tragic story of her family, revealing the ethnic problems, gender problems and the inter-generational transmission of trauma hidden behind the tragedy. Among the characters, Lydia and her mother Marilyn had a particularly strong tragic color, which is inseparable from their female gender. Therefore, feminism will be a prominent theoretical lead to unfold the theme of novel.

At the end of the 19th century, the first wave of feminism appeared, demanding gender equality; From the 1960s to 1970s, the second wave of feminism rose. This wave of feminism is considered to have originated in the United States. Its appeal is to realize gender equality, emphasize the nature of gender division of labor and eliminate the phenomenon of different pay for equal work between men and women. Since the 1990s, the third wave of feminism began to rise. The story in Everything I Never Told You happened in the second wave of feminism. Lydia''s mother, Marilyn, once had the awakening of female consciousness in her adolescence and resisted the stereotype of society. But after she got married and became a mother, things changed. She still seemed to resist in another way, but at the same time she became an oppressor, and Lydia became a new oppressed. This transformation of role identity has aroused my thinking.

In the theory of social psychology, there is role theory. G. H. Mead is the first person to introduce the concept of role into social psychology. This theory attempts to explain the emergence and change of social psychology and behavior from the attribute of human social role, and explore the social impact of human behavior.
