1. 研究目的与意义

Initiation is an essential step for all human beings, which means one achieves maturity after experiencing ordeals or perplexity. And initiation story shows the protagonist’s growing process from naivety to maturity both in physical and psychological conditions. This thesis will analyze the novel from the perspective of initiation story. The House on Mango Street is a representative work about marginalized people written by Sandra Cisneros, which shows the living perplexity of women in Mexican American. Through her own experience and others'' guidance, the protagonist finally woke up and matured. The thesis will analyze the protagonist''s growth experience in the immigrant community from the perspectives of initiation story, with ethnic issues and immigrant life as the background, and show how protagonist finally grew into an independent woman. Although racial and gender equality has gradually taken root in people''s minds, minority women are still in a double marginal position in American society. Studying the growth process of Mexican-American girls can help us deeply understand the survival dilemma faced by minority women living in American society, which is of great social significance.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Research content: The thesis will explore the background information of the novel and analyze the protagonist''s confusion on gender, race and class discrimination in the process of her growth. She realized the importance of education and found the way to change her destiny—by writing. With the development of self-consciousness and the change of cognition of the house, she decided not to rely on marriage or men to live a better life like other women in the community. On the opposite, she wanted to change her living predicament through her own efforts. For her, the house not only symbolized the ethnic identity and female identity of immigrants, but also represented women''s will to strive for their own rights and interests. Finally, she wanted to have a house of her own. While realizing her own growth, she decided to go back to Mango Street to help other ethnic women who are caught in difficulties.
